Hey Nandi, so glad I discovered that you have a substack and wrote this article! "Vocal jail" is such a great term. I'm starting to round up some songs to finish up for release and I'm leaving the vocals until last because of what you describe here. It's comforting to know that someone who can sing as well as you struggles with the same insecurities. Here's my favorite perfect imperfect performance ever:
Very relatable and beautifully written. Thanks! :)
I always struggle with the decision of how many effects to put on my voice to make it sound more flawless: on one hand it sounds really nice with effects but on the other I feel like it is also inherently beautiful to keep it as lean and natural as possible and embracing the flaws and imperfections that come with it.
I feel you! I think it really comes down to the stylistic choice for each particular song. Some songs want a more stylized, effected approach while others breathe more with a stripped down sound. It's fun to experiment with the balance. There's no wrong answer!

As a fellow musician of sorts, this resonated so deeply and felt so validating and helpful. Thanks :)
